Mengjiangnu Temple
孟姜女庙
About
Mengjiangnu Temple, also called the Temple of the Faithful Maiden, sits on Fenghuang (Phoenix) Hill about 6 km east of Shanhaiguan's old town. Said to predate the Song dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming era, it commemorates one of China's four great folk legends, in which Meng Jiangnu's weeping is said to have broken a section of the Great Wall. Visitors climb 108 stone steps to the main hall, which holds a painted statue of Meng Jiangnu and a famous punning couplet. Behind the temple, the Wangfu (Longing for Husband) Rock marks where she is said to have watched for her husband. A garden area below retells the legend through staged scenes. Allow 1-2 hours.

Before you go
- It's easy to combine with Shanhaiguan Old Town and Old Dragon's Head in one day, as all are within a 15-minute drive of each other.
- The 108-step stone stairway to the temple is fairly steep — elderly visitors and children should take breaks, and watch for slippery steps.
- Peak season gets crowded around midday, so visit in the morning or evening, which also gives better light for photos.
- It's windy at the top with good views over the Bohai Sea, so bring sun protection or something warm.
- Book tickets online in advance in peak season to avoid lines.
- Steps and paths can ice over in winter, so watch your footing.
